Retreat Speaker: Rev. Dr. Karl Fung
Rev. Dr. (Captain) Karl Fung was brought up in Hong Kong. He graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, majoring in Chinese and minoring in religion. After teaching high school for two years, he was called to become a minister. He studied in McCormick and San Francisco Theological Seminaries to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees.
He served as pastor in three Chinese churches in Detroit, San Diego, and Berkeley. He is bilingual and bicultural. He speaks English and Cantonese fluently. He can also carry a conversation in Mandarin.
He served as a U.S. Navy chaplain for 25 years. Besides working in the Naval Submarine Force and other duty stations, he served as the regional chaplain of Commander Naval Force Japan. He also held different positions with the Marines to include ministering in the battlefield during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
He is the first Chinese-American to be promoted as Navy Captain in the Chaplain Corps, and he was awarded the prestigious Legion of Merit medal. Besides writing in professional magazines, he has published two books – The Dragon Pilgrim and How to Live a Blissful Life.
He retired after 40 years of ministry and is now serving as the interim pastor of the Chinese Community Church in San Diego.
