Many Christians have begun to share these concerns. In response, the pastoral staff at Chinese Bible Church of San Diego (CBCSD) conducted research and discussions on the topic, “AI—Friend or Foe?” Based on our Christian faith, they developed a statement reflecting on the use of artificial intelligence, entitled “What Christians Should Know and Be on Guard about Artificial Intelligence (AI).” This statement has been posted in the “Theological Position Paper” section of our church website. The pastoral staff encourages brothers and sisters to visit the website and read it. Below is a brief introduction to the statement.
Chinese Bible Church of San Diego (CBCSD) recognizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a human-created technological tool that may be used for beneficial purposes in learning, communication, administration, and ministry. Like the printing press, computers, the internet, and search engines before it, AI can be used for good or for harm. While AI may provide information and assistance, it is not a source of divine truth, spiritual authority, or wisdom. Christians are encouraged to use AI responsibly while remaining rooted in Scripture, dependent upon the Holy Spirit, committed to Christian community, and devoted to Jesus Christ as the ultimate source of truth, wisdom, and life.
We Affirm:We Reject:
- AI is a useful human-created tool that may be employed for beneficial purposes.
- Human beings alone are created in the image of God.
- Wisdom ultimately comes from God rather than machines.
- Christians should engage technology thoughtfully and responsibly.
- Treating AI as a source of spiritual authority.
- Replacing prayer, Scripture, and Christian fellowship with AI.
- Viewing AI as a person or moral being.
- Using AI deceptively or irresponsibly.
